As Indian Market Remains Dull, EV Pioneer Mahindra Looks At Large Overseas EV Markets

Mahindra to expand its EV offering outside India

Mahindra which is one of India’s largest automakers and one of the first movers in the Electric Vehicle space wants to expand into the overseas market. The company which has the most famous EV on Indian roads has not got much traction till now. Very few EVs were sold in the Indian market last year as compared to large global markets such as China and USA. India barely sold 22,000 EVs as compared to the hundreds of thousands of EVs sold in China and USA.

Despite government efforts, electric vehicles in India have been really slow to take off. The charging infrastructure remains almost non-existent and EV cars are a rarity on Indian roads. Public awareness remains almost non-existent and the costs of EVs are still much higher as compared to the normal combustion cars. Though the Indian government wants 4 million EVs on Indian roads by 2020, the implementation on the ground has remained stagnant.

Mahindra wants to use its Korean acquisition Ssangyong to spearhead its auto efforts in the world’s largest Electric Vehicle markets of USA and China. The company is looking to set up manufacturing plants in these places to push EVs. However, the success of the company remains in doubt as these markets are highly competitive with huge incumbents with very large pockets. The U.S. is also home of the iconic Tesla which has been making waves all over the world. Even China has strong homegrown EV players such as Baidu which would strongly protect their turf from new upstarts.
