Benefits of Nuclear Energy for World Environment – For and Against

Nuclear Energy has become a hugely contorversial topic after the Fukushima incident in Japan where a nuclear disaster took place because of the earthquake and tsunami. Both the pro and anti nuclear groups have come out with strident arguments for and against nuclear energy. However in some countries like Germany,Switzerland the anti nuclear sentiment has gained so much support that they have decided to permanently end nuclear electricity generation despite the high costs. Before this nuclear based power was gaining ascendancy leading many to call it a nuclear renaissance as countries like China and India made plans to increase their nuclear power plant capacities massively. But the nuclear accident has thrown a spanner in the works with huge protests being seen in India and China despite its authoritarianism also slowing down its nuclear expansion plans.

Toshiba acquiring, investing in Green Companies (Landis & Gyr,Unison) as Nuclear Energy faces Fukushima Winter

Japanese Nuclear Giant Toshiba which is the second largest seller of complex nuclear equipment globally is looking to shift its focus towards Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency. The company is already facing delays in shipping nuclear reactors to customers as the Fukushima Disaster makes governments around the world rethink their nuclear power ambitions. The Nuclear Energy Disadvantages are winning over the Advantages currently in public sentiment.Toshiba which acquired US Westinghouse has a target of selling 39 nuclear reactors which is getting delayed. With advanced nuclear power countries like Germany,Switzerland and Japan killing nuclear energy, the going looks tough for Toshiba. The company was already facing tough competition from the GE-Hitachi and Areva as well as new players from South Korea and China in the nuclear equipment market.

Japan to Kill New Nuclear Energy (Toshiba),Support Renewable Energy – Will India Learn (Jaitapur)

Nuclear Energy has been dealt a very heavy blow with Japan deciding to stop building any new nuclear plants from now onwards.PM Kan in a dramatic move announced that Japan's plan to build 14 new nuclear reactors which would increase the share of nuclear power to 50% from 30% has been canceled. The new energy plan of Japan will have more focus on renewable energy and energy efficiency.Note Germany had already shut down 7 of its old nuclear plants with immediate effect following the Fukushima disaster. These nuclear reactors have almost no chance of being started back as hundreds of thousands of German protested against nuclear energy and the Green Party won its first government in Germany.Italy and Switzerland too have put their nuclear power plants under review while other countries too are slowing down the approval process for new nuclear reactors.Nuclear Power in its current form seems to be dying in the developed world with other developed countries too facing opposition to nuclear plants.Note the effects of Nuclear Radiation are quite deadly and widespread even in lower doses or sieverts as was brought to the fore during the Fukushima disaster. It can lead to billions of dollars in lost economic activity.Already 3 major disasters have unfolded in the last 40 years in USA,Russia and Japan despite the safety touted by the Nuclear Industry.

Toxic Nuclear Waste to be Dumped on Poor Citizens Mongolia by Japan,USA for Toshiba,GE Nuclear Reactors

Mongolia has been chosen by the two countries to open a nuclear wastes storage site for their companies radioactive waste.GE-Hitachi and Toshiba-Westinghouse are two of the three largest nuclear equipment suppliers in the world and have big plans to export billions of dollars of reactors to emerging markets. These will generate huge levels of waste which would need disposing of.Mongolia is a convenient dumping ground as it a developing country with lax environmental laws. The country has big plans for uranium extraction and building on nuclear power plants as well.Another case of dumping of toxic waste on developing countries by developed countries.Note the citizens of Japan and USA have made life difficult for those wanting to construct permanent nuclear waste storage facilities.Having failed to dump dangerous waste near their citizens, the government of these countries plan to dump the radioactive waste on poor citizens of Mongolia.

Will USA,India and China Learn from Japanese Tsunami Nuclear Disaster and promote Solar and Wind

The Tsunami Nuclear Energy Disaster which is unfolding in Japan highlights that Nuclear Energy can cause some very serious damage though the safety of the nuclear reactors are highly touted in the media by the Nuclear Energy Industry. These Nuclear Plants in Japan are quite old but so are most of the Nuclear Energy facilities in the West. Most of these Nuclear Plants are susceptible to serious natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis. In case of a nuclear meltdown the radiation from the Nuclear Plants can not only cause more deaths and injuries from natural causes but also make the area around the Nuclear Plant uninhabitable for hundreds of years.India and China are on a major Nuclear Energy Building Spree even though their nuclear plants have faced minor accidents in recent years. With this Nuclear Disaster, the protests in the se countries are set to grow with NIMBY becoming the biggest hurdle.Already protests are being held in Jaitapur in Maharashtra over damage to the ecology, expect the Japan's nuclear reactor incident to basically kill this Areva-NPCIL plant.Nuclear plants in the US and Europe are already facing huge cost and time overruns. This new problem should cause those projects to also die off.

Japan Solar Energy – Future Growth driven by METI and 7 Zaibatsus (Sharp,Panasonic,Mitsubishi,Honda,Mitsui,Toshiba,Kyocera)

Solar Energy in Japan has a long future dating back to 1994 when the government introduced capital subsidies to boost solar energy installations on rooftops.Till 2004,Japan was the largest solar market in the world after which it was overtaken by Germany. After 2004,the growth in the solar industry tapered off as the government reduced the subsidies for solar panels to almost zero. The huge domestic market gave rise to Japanese companies like Sharp,Mitsubishi,Kyocera,Panasonic-Sanyo become top solar panel producers in the world. However the low cost Chinese solar module producers have pushed back most of the Japanese companies.Since the last year, the Japanese government has again started giving generous solar subsidies and feed in tariff to boost the renewable energy production in the country which remains far off targets. This has led Japan to become the top non-European market after USA and the growth seems set to continue in the future as well.Japan has relatively low installations costs and is much nearer to grid parity. Also lack of wind energy makes solar energy more attractive as a renewable energy choice. While large scale solar installations in Japan are almsot absent, there remain large numbers of rooftop solar installations.

List of Top MNC Conglomerates (Toshiba,LG,TSMC,GE) getting into Solar Energy- Growing Continuously

While the major solar energy companies are expanding rapidly as the solar industry grew by almost 150% in 2010,a number of non-solar MNCs have gotten into this sector. The massive growth of solar industry which has been vastly underestimated by policymaker and analysts have not been hidden from these giant companies. While a number of these companies have been present since a long time, some are entering the growing solar energy field for the first time. Some like BP have lost the plot and become minor players despite being top companies a few years ago.Shell has totally left the solar energy field selling its plant to Motech.Asian conglomerates and semiconductor companies have been the most aggressive in entering this area.Chemical companies too have shown interest in building polysilicon plants which build on their core competence.Others have entered the Solar Thermal Energy Field which reinforces their traditional strengths in building power plants and EPC work. Here is list of the top non-solar companies entering the solar sector.

Does India need a Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) Plant by Toshiba and NTPC

Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) has been mooted as one of the main weapons against climate change. With little alternative to Coal based power generation,CCS is touted as a temporary solution. However CCS as a global warming solution is like putting lipstick on a pig.The technology for CCS remains immature at best and even the biggest users of coal, the Chinese utilities have ruled out using CCS before 2015.Though big pilot projects have been announced in Australia,USA and UK,CCS is not a serious option as far as dealing with climate change. This however has not prevented companies from playing in this area.Toshiba is the latest company to join the CCS fray hoping to set up a 5 MW pilot plant in JV with India's biggest power utility NTPC.

Nuclear Energy in India – List of Nuclear Power Plants and Sites Increasing Rapidly

Nuclear Energy in India is going to quadruple in the next decade as India's power hungry economy requires increasing amounts of energy to sustain its growth.India's Electricity Capacity is targeted to reach 450 GW from around 160 GW at present which would require increasing the supply from all renewable energy sources as well as non-renewable sources. While Thermal Power will continue to remain the top dog with 60-70% of the capacity,Nuclear Power which forms just 3% of the current capacity is also poised to grow exponentially.India's Nuclear Power deal with USA have paved the way for India to again part of the civilian nuclear club which would allow import of uranium fuel and nuclear technology. It would also allow Nuclear Equipment Producers like Toshiba,Areva and GE to set up Nuclear Power Plants in India.Note India has a long history of a home grown indigenous nuclear power program with nuclear power capacity of around 4.5 GW.Despite facing low utilization in recent times due to inadequate supply of uranium fuel, the nuclear energy industry has continued its growth path.India is the only country spending large amounts in Thorium Fuel R&D as the country has huge deposits of the element.

Guest Post: Overcoming Financing Hurdles in the Nuclear Industry

Nuclear Energy Insider spoke to Kenneth Hughey, Vice President, Nuclear Business Development at Entergy Nuclear who spoke about the financing problems that lie ahead for the US nuclear industry.“With nuclear construction being a high priority for many US utilities, it is important to stop and consider financing and the costs associated with new build projects. Permitting and licensing are aspects of the construction process where utilities could easily spend $60-100million without having guaranteed financial backing to proceed with the full construction project. Consequently it is extremely important to understand the costs associated with these processes and to learn how to keep your costs down while at the same time reducing future project risk.”There are many aspects of financing that need to be understood in order to proceed with new nuclear projects.
