Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) which is India’s space research organization recently announced that it has developed an innovative way to produce lithium-ion based batteries in a low-cost manner for mass production. India is a nobody in the lithium battery industry which is dominated by the likes of South Korea, Japan and China. Even the USA is making rapid strides with Tesla’s giant gigafactory starting production of lithium batteries for both cars as well as grid-scale energy storage. India on the other hand imports almost all of its requirements of lithium batteries from other countries.
ISRO now could change the industry as it looks to set up a framework to share its technology with Indian manufacturers both from the public and private sector. The company is evaluating proposals from a number of companies such as Tata Motors, Indian Oil, Mahindra, BHEL and others to license its technology to produce lithium batteries in India. Even some large foreign carmakers such as Nissan and Hyundai have evinced interest in this technology.

India needs to desperately set up battery manufacturing as this industry will see huge growth in the future driven by the demand for EVs as well as the power industry. With Indian government targeting an all EV fleet by 2030, the demand from India is going to be an exponential. India does not want to become an import slave to China as it is currently in numerous products such as solar panels, smartphones, electronics, steel and many other items. China through its unfair state capitalistic model has decimated Indian industry in numerous sectors pricing products way below their costs. India needs to proactively grow its industry otherwise it will become a two piece African banana nation dependent on China for even its basic needs such as toys and shoes besides sophisticated products such as EVs and solar panels.

I would love to get more specific information on the issue. I am interested in starting up the production of low cost lithium batteries for cars and household solar units upto 5 kva output. It will bring a watershed change in the Indian economy and social life.
