The Indian Delhi Metro is going to put up bifacial solar panels along the railway tracks it is going to newly construct in the Indian capital. These bifacial solar panels will not only generate energy for the railway company but also serve the function of sound barriers. The Delhi Metro is one of the most successful metro companies in India and has built a large number of lines criss-crossing the capital. This has allowed millions of commuters to avail a cheap transport option in a green manner. It is also one of the major consumers of solar energy that is going to be generated by the massive solar park in Madhya Pradesh that was recently bid out for INR 3.3/kWh.

DMRC as the metro company is known, now wants to try out another green innovation in using solar panels as sound barriers. Many countries are already using solar panels as sound barriers and DMRC will become the first metro in India to use solar panels for this dual purpose. DMRC has also heavily invested in green technologies as it wants its new stations and offices to run completely on solar energy. The company has plans to install 50 MW of solar energy capacity by 2021. 

What are Bifacial Solar Panels

Bifacial solar panels use two faces instead of one to absorb solar energy. Solar panels don’t have the normal aluminum backing but instead use glass to absorb the sunlight reflected from the ground or rooftop. This increases the energy generated from solar panels by at least 5% but it can be much more depending on the orientation of the solar panels. The glass used on both sides of the solar panels also increases the reliability and robustness of the solar panels
