In an interesting incident, vast numbers of solar panels were burned to ashes at a project site in the southern state of Telangana. Though the exact number of solar panels that were burnt is not known, what is understood is that the solar panels were stockpiled at a site for building a 25 crore solar farm. Note that Telangana had recently come out with a tender to install 500 MW of solar farms in different parts of the state. This had led to a vast number of inexperienced bidders joining the fray and winning, given there was no experience criteria required by the government.

The incident took place due to the inefficiency of the management whereby there was no caretaker or security for the solar panels kept at the Enkatapur village in Mudhole Mandal. Vayudoot Solarfarms Private Ltd.’s crores were wiped out due to this fire. It is not known whether the company had used transit insurance or not.

Suzlon Energy Ltd.  owns Vayudoot SolarFarms as a wholly owned subsidiary of the company. The company had planned to sell this subsidiary after developing the farm. It has already sold a number of solar farms to CLP and Canadian Solar. Suzlon had won 210 MW of solar farms and these solar projects were to  be built under 6 different Special Purpose Vehicle (SPVs):

• Avighna Solarfarms Private Limited
• Prathamesh Solarfarms Private Limited
• Rudra Solarfarms Private Limited, and
• Vayudoot Solarfarms Private Limited.
