State Wise Solar State Rankings – India 2021

India reached the 150+ GW mark for the year ended December 2021. The country is chasing the target of achieving 170GW by 2022 and 500 GW by 2030. India also aims to reduce the carbon intensity of the economy by ~45% by the end of the decade. Out of the 150+ GW mark, wind comprised 40+ GW, Solar was 49 GW, hydro totaled 50+ GW, and biopower constituted 10+ GW.

India’s solar sector ranked amongst the top five attractive world markets by IBEF. To keep the momentum of increased investments in the renewable energy space in India and to make India self-reliant, the government announced a production linked scheme and one of the largest budget allocations of Rs. 33.7 billion in the country’s history. The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has given its approval to introduce the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme in high efficiency solar PV modules for enhancing India’s manufacturing capabilities and increasing exports, involving an outlay of Rs. 24,000 crores.

Indian top renewable energy states by capacity were Tamil Nadu with 15,910 MW, Gujarat with 15,510 MW, and Maharashtra for the year 2021. These states continued their march towards achieving clean energy targets for their country. While Gujarat and Rajasthan collectively added 7.2 GW of renewable energy capacity in the last fiscal year, other states such as Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka added a combined 2.2 GW of capacity during the same period.

Maharashtra ranked fifth in India in terms of electricity generation from renewable energy and is targeting to generate 25% of its total electricity generation from renewable energy by 2025. Maharashtra also witnessed an increase of 150% in new EV registrations during the last three quarters of 2021. Gujarat was the largest in terms of total rooftop solar installations. The state is also expecting to house large manufacturing solar hubs to support gigawatt production scales in the near future.
