Apple’s 100% Renewable Energy Commitment

Apple, the largest tech giant in the world has vowed to run 100% on renewable energy and has been successful in achieving the same. Running all your global facilities fully on sustainable energy is no small feat for a company as large as Apple, having a huge geographic footprint. Today all of Apple’s facilities worldwide are running fully on clean energy. When a company as large and famous as Apple vows to clean energy, the world surely wants to do something similar. After Apple’s announcement, 23 of its other suppliers have committed to 100% clean energy production. The emissions from these suppliers could reduce GHG emissions to the tune of taking off over 300,000 cars off the road.

All of Apple’s retail stores, offices, data centers and facilities in more than 40 countries in the US, the UK, China, and India are powered fully with clean energy. The company has been using a diverse range of energy sources, like solar arrays and wind farms as well as emerging technologies like biogas fuel cells, micro-hydro generation systems and other energy storage technologies for its huge power requirements. Apple aims at over 1.4 GW of clean renewable energy generation across 11 countries worldwide. These installations have reduced Apple’s greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50% from its facilities worldwide.

Apple now has 25 operational renewable energy projects, with 15 more in construction in 11 countries. With just about 16% of the facilities running on renewable energy in 2010, the company has come a long way today Well, it makes complete sense for a cash-rich company like Apple to afford the sophisticated renewable sources of power generation, but Apple doing so has given a much-needed push to the global rates of adoption for solar, wind, biogas and other renewable sources of energy. It is the need of the hour that well-managed companies like Apple adopt renewable power and set an example for the world at large.

Apple’s Cupertino headquarters is powered by renewable energy from different sources like solar, biogas and battery storage. Apple is also getting its suppliers and local utilities switch to 100% renewable energy.  The company has been working closely with the local utility companies and regulators to build generate more green power and pump the excess power into the public grid. As renewable sources of energy become more efficient and affordable with each passing day, local utilities and developers, are in a better place to play major roles in building new energy projects.
