A Jaw-dropping 170 GW of Additional Solar Capacity Might Come to China

China May Install  170 GW in 3-1/2Years

China has set a very low target of 105 GW of solar power by 2020 which seems laughable given that the country has installed around 85 GW already, with three and a half years to go. The NEA which is the central authority in charge of setting renewable energy targets has revised it up now. However, even this estimate may be too low with Energy Trends predicting a 2020 Chinese target of 250 GW of solar capacity which is nearly 2.5 time what the earlier target was. With solar energy prices touching new lows almost every month, and China having a massive surplus capacity, this target may not seem to be unachievable.

China has already set up a new record high capacity of almost 24 GW in the first half of 2016 which means that the country could easily do 40 GW this year. With solar energy prices falling doing at least 40 GW a year seems quite easy. Though there are constraints such as the availability of the grid to move solar power from one region to another, it has not stopped the growth of solar energy till now. Though RE developers have suffered due to lack of timely payments, new capacity is still coming up at a torrid pace.

Besides China is also installing distributed solar energy capacity at a rapid pace which was earlier getting stalled.
