USA Solar Generation Target (2014)

USA will reach 16 GW of PV generation capacity. According to US Solar Market Insight Report, the USA installed close to 1,133 MW of solar power in Q2 2014. More than half of the electricity generated in the first half of the year was solar. The report (done jointly by GTM Research and Solar Energy Industries’ Association SEIA) claims that the total utility-scale installed capacity for the first half of 2012 was 1,784MW, which increased by 318% till the present half year of 2014 to 7,308 MW. This is an outstanding performance by the country. About 625 MW of utility-scale solar was installed in Q2 2014 alone.

The residential sector is also doing a tremendous effort. More than 100 MW of residential solar was installed in the first half of 2014 and that too without any state subsidy support. The report predicts that USA will install approximately 6.5 GW in 2014, which will amount to a 36% increase from the last year. Another report from IHS predicts a 9.5 GW of solar installations in 2014.

China is all set to become the leader in PV installations and has announced a solar target of 40 GW by 2015, after the initial target of 5 GW. Will US be the second in rank in the total installed PV capacity after China? Well we’ll have to wait and see. Meanwhile, USA completed the construction of two largest CSP plants – Ivanpah a 392 MW project and Genesis Solar second phase of 125 MW in the second half of 2014. The coming years are going to be very exciting for the solar industry. With the world going more Green and Clean, there will be more thrill for the industry and more such targets to achieve.
