Indian Government’s New Hair Brained Scheme – Export 500 MW of Electricity to Pakistan to build Good Relations

India suffers from a huge deficit in power generation with many parts of the countries suffering from chronic power cuts. Electricity companies in India are currently suffering losses as the governance and regulation remains ineffective. The country’s Power sector is suffering from lack of fuel, unremunerative prices and non-payment of dues from bankrupt state owned distribution companies. Besides rules and laws are not followed as almost 30-40% of the power generated is either lost in transmission or stolen. The pathetic situation of the power industry was brought to global media attention when India suffered from two massive grid failures due to rule breaking by states greedily overdrawing power from the grid.

Now a Government proposal to export 500 MW of electricity to Pakistan has drawn howls of protests from the citizens. Pakistan which has a even a worse Government than India has totally run the electricity industry to the ground. The country is desperate for power and some foreign ministry mandarins in their infinite wisdom have decided to play the good neighbor by exporting power even as cities like Gurgaon regularly face 8-10 hour power cuts. The Government of India continues to amaze you everyday with its hare brained governance.

India is looking to sell 500 MW of electricity to Pakistan by establishing a transmission link between the two countries.

“A Group of experts of India and Pakistan met in Islamabad last month to explore the possibility of a 500 MW cross border transmission inter-connection between India and Pakistan for transmission of power that may be sourced by Pakistan from the Indian electricity market on commercial basis,” Minister of State for Power K C Venugopal informed the Rajya Sabha today.

Electricity from central and state generating stations supplying power to discoms is not proposed to be diverted to Pakistan, he said.

Mode of transmission is proposed to be transmission interconnection and the duration of transmission of electricity would depend on the contractual arrangement of trade.
