Saudi Arabia has recently unveiled a new plan to add almost 40 Gigawatts of solar power over the next 20 years investing more than $100 billion. This environment friendly solar power has huge advantages & its costs are declining at a rapid pace. The country wants to generate almost 30% of its power from solar energy in the future and reduce its reliance on oil to generate electricity for its fast growing population. The country has also finalized a near term plan to add a couple of gigawatts in the next year or so using a mix of solar thermal and solar panel technology. Note countries keep coming up with grandiose plans to generate huge amounts of renewable energy without it amounting to much in reality. UAE with its Masdar City and big plans turned out to be a damp squib with Masdar its renewable energy company turning out to be a jack of all trades and master of none.

Recently many Middle East countries had also unveiled plans for nuclear energy generation but many have turned their backs after seeing the dangerous disadvantages of nuclear power in Japan. However Saudi Arabia most probably will implement this plan given the drastically reduced cost of solar energy these days. In the scale that Saudis are planning to build they could easily get the cost down to 10c/kwh for these plants given the ample sunshine. Already companies like First Solar are setting up offices in the Middle East to take advantage of the growing demand there.

Saudi Arabia does not love the environment or green cause too much given its shocking objection to island nation’s request for global warming data and its demand to be compensated for lost oil revenues as countries take initiatives to prevent global warming. However the government does love its petrodollars and wants to earn it by exploring oil rather than burning it to generate dirt cheap power for its citizens

From Bloomberg

Saudi Arabia is seeking investors for a $109 billion plan to create a solar industry that generates a third of the nation’s electricity by 2032, according to officials at the agency developing the plan. The world’s largest crude oil exporter aims to have 41,000 megawatts of solar capacity within two decades, said Maher al- Odan, a consultant at the King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy.

Citing government officials, Deutsche Bank said the capacity would be added in competitive bidding starting with 1,100 megawatts of PV and 900 megawatts of solar thermal in the first quarter of 2013. A second round of bidding is due in the second half of 2014.

Saudi Arabia is probably one of the worst countries in the world with regards to human rights with its culture and society still stuck in the Stone Age.For readers who might think I am being extreme which modern society kills a foreign citizen ( that a very poor one) by beheading her with a sword without even giving a warning to the foreigners embassy.Well if you are wondering Saudi Arabia did this act on Saturday in full public glory.Note Middle Eastern nations are infamous for the forceful exploitation of poor unskilled workers from foreign countries.Note the legal system in Saudi Arabia is a joke just like its political system which is a dictatorship propped by Western interests.Saudi Arabia not only oppresses foreigners but also its own women who can’t even drive a car in the kingdom. Its only nature’s luck that has put this brutal regime in such a position that it can cock a snook to almost everyone due to its fabulous oil riches and a supportive US government that will do stoop to any level for Oil.

Indonesia has seen a massive outcry over the beheading forcing its government to put a ban on movement of workers from Indonesia to Saudi Arabia.Note the same thing had happened to Malaysia and after 2 years the workers were allowed again after Malaysia assured of better working conditions and justice.Saudi Arabia on the other hand is least concerned as there are other countries ready to fill the breach and is acting all arrogant. With increasing prosperity coming to labor surplus countries like Indonesia and India, the human rights abuses are becoming less tolerable and the governments are being forced to take action. Here is an excerpt my last blog post on How Middle Eastern Countries Screw Indians and other South Asians in an Institutionalize Manner

The whole immigration system to the Middle East is one of institutionalized corruption where the worker is exploited. The whole process in long, cumbersome and used to facilitate corruption. The racket also involves dummy companies who hire workers through false documents for a fat fee from the workers who are left holding the can in case they are caught. The legal and police system of those countries heavily favor the domestic citizens while the expatriates are treated as third class citizens. The Westerners are not treated as crudely as they have powerful government/embassies backing them. The South Asian countries on the other hand are submissive and pliant as they can’t protest the regular abuses their citizens face as they get huge remittances from the workers.Note these countries benefit greatly from the foreign workers as most of their citizens don’t have the skills and education and little motivation to gain them as well. Most of them get cushy government jobs where they don’t have to work and get most of the life’s essentials free from the government (courtesy the huge oil revenues). What I am writing in this blog post will be nothing new for the millions of foreign workers in the Middle East ,however the absence of media coverage on this is quite galling.Note not all countries are as bad with Dubai being highly liberal and fast becoming a great place to live thanks to great policies. But less said the better about the other regimes like Saudi Arabia,Kuwait the better.

Saudi Arabia propped up by Vested Western Interests

Riding on the wings of Western Support,Saudi even sent its troops to kill and suppress a popular uprising in Bahrain. The Western Media was mum on these killings even as it went to town speaking of atrocities in Libya and Ivory Coast leading to Western fighters bombarding these countries.

The Hypocrisy of the Western Governments is quite shocking as they support the Dictatorial Saudi Arabian invasion of Bahrain.Note Bahrain has been rocked by protests from its poor and suppressed citizens for the last month or so which has seen some violent reprisals by the Bahrain Military.Like Saudi Arabia,Bahrain too is ruled by tyrannical Sunni Kings who don’t allow any democracy or promote equality.Like Libya,Bahrain has hired mercenaries to quell their citizens but there have been no protests by the Western Media. However the protests have become so big that the Bahrain rulers have asked for “help” from their fellow despots in Saudi Arabia.”Democracy” Champion USA does not think this move as an invasion and has called for calm.

Indonesia Stops Sending Maids to Saudi Arabia

Indonesia said it will stop sending domestic workers to Saudi Arabia until the two countries can do more to protect the hundreds of thousands of Indonesian maids and other migrants that work there.

The announcement comes in the wake of a national outcry in Indonesia over the surprise execution of Ruyati binti Sapubi, an Indonesian maid who was convicted of murdering her Saudi employer. Indonesian diplomats said they weren’t notified before Ms. Sapubi was beheaded with a sword in Mecca on Saturday.

There were similar calls to end the flow of labor late last year after a spate of reports of alleged maid abuse and even murder in Saudi Arabia. In one series of reports and photos that triggered protest rallies in the Indonesian capital, a 23-year-old maid’s employer allegedly abused her by beating her, cutting her lip with scissors and burning her back with an iron.

Please note that all my criticism is directed towards the governments and big corporates who are responsible for the abuses and exploitation (which exists in one degree or another in most places in the world) and not towards any country.

Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Middle Eastern countries have huge populations of expatriate workers most of them from the poor countries of South Asia. The number of Indian workers in these countries has become so large that they rival that of the citizens of these countries. However they don’t pose a threat as unlike liberal countries of the West, the Middle Eastern dictatorships don’t allow them to get citizenship, own land/businesses and impose onerous conditions for living there.Despite gaining massively from the skills of the foreign workers, most of the unsilled workers are treated like shit. However, for the poor, the Middle East is still a popular destination despite all the hardships they are put though. The reason is the lack of enough opportunities at home making them highly vulnerable to the lures of the riches of the Middle East which they can never achieve. The way low skilled workers are treated by companies of the Middle East would make even Scrooge cringe. They are  treated like bonded labor and have little recourse to the law as most of the Middle Eastern countries justice systems are a complete joke.Even in the most advanced state Dubai, the legal system had made a mockery of the contract law when many of the foreign buyers of real estate were faced with bankrupt developers.Note most of the policies followed by Saudi Arabia and other GCC countries related to Climate Change,Human Rights etc. is shocking , so it does not come as a big surprise that they continue to condone the human right abuses of  unskilled impoverished workers from South Asia and other poor countries.Molesting of domestic help from Phillipines and other countries is so common that it does not make headlines any more. However their home country government are no better as they continue to allow these abuses as they don’t dare antagonize these rich regimes.

Super Rich Middle East still has a Medieval Culture and Society

Saudi Arabia is the biggest and richest Middle Eastern country but its social and cultural systems are still medieval with laws like an eye for an eye, lashings for looking at females, beheadings for small infringements etc.The ruling Saudis control the kingdom with an iron hand akin to Mubarak and Gaddafi of Egypt and Libya. However unlike those poor dictators, they enjoy the support of the West. This means that they can happily go and invade Bahrain and kill the citizens of that country trying to overthrow the repressive regime there ,without any western media outrage.Note its only the billions of dollars of oil riches that has made these autocratic regimes survive this long. But its only a matter of time before these regimes end as Egypt,Libya and Yemen would testify. These countries have huge numbers of young people looking to gain a voice in the ways things are run.Though the richer countries can throw money at the problem,it does not solve the fundamental causes. While the poor countries like Yemen have already succumbed to the democratic urge, the richer ones too should ultimately go down.

Saudi Arabia is looking to restrict the terms of foreign workers to 6 years to control abuses.Note this will completely screw the lives of the workers as they will have to rethink how to make a livelihood. However the countries there care a hoot about the plight of these workers as they think that the high unemployment amongst domestic citizens could be solved.I doubt that it will considering that citizens have little incentive to work hard and earn since they are given most of the necessities and luxuries without sweating.

Saudi Arabia plans six-year cap on expatriate workers

Saudi Arabia may soon impose a six-year cap on the residency of foreigners in the country as part of its programme to regulate the local labour market, a move likely to affect a large number of Indians working in that country.

Companies hiring expatriate workers will be given five months after the implementation of the labour reforms programme to regularise their situation, the country’s Labour Minister Adel Al Faqih said.

The reforms will also help tackle the black market for employment visas to the rate of 99 per cent. The ministry would go ahead with the programme and that there would be no leniency in its application, Al Faqih said, according to Saudi daily Al Watan.

The United Nations has voted on enforcing a “No Fly Zone” in Libya as Colonel Gadhaffi’s forces backed by aircraft and artillery have bombed their way to a winning position in Libya. The democratic protests in Libya has been violently suppressed by the despotic regime over there which has appeared at times as mad and lunatic. The rebels despite popular support have been cowed down by the massive military power of Gadhaffi and his mercenaries. This has  finally made the United Nations Security Council decide on attacking Libyan army by Air and enforcing a “No Fly Zone’.Note this has been done despite misgivings by China and others who abstained. However the West led by France has been adamant on helping democracy.

Turkey calls for cease-fire in Libya, opposes intervention

NATO member Turkey called for a cease-fire in Libya on Friday after the UN Security Council authorized a no-fly zone and the use of force against forces of Muammar Gaddafi to help rebels revolting against his rule.

Western Hypocrisy in Full View in Bahrain and Yemen

The governments in Bahrain and Yemen have been no less brutal in suppressing the democractic aspirations of their citizens. The ruling regimes in those countries which are monarchies have been looting public money and not allowing genuine democracy and freedom.Inspired by Tunisia and Egypt, the citizens in those countries have demanded the same right to freedom. They have been met with massacres by Yemeni forces who shot down 45 people dead and wounded hundreds.Bahrain has been equally opressive shutting down hospitals which were treating wounded protestors. They have even invited foreign military personnel to kill and intimdate protestors. The Use of Apache gunships against mostly unarmed citizens is as bad as it gets. However the West and US have remained silent in their hypocrisy. The client regimes of the Middle East can do whatever they please without any pressure from the  West.Except for some sermons there has been no talk of harder measures like sanctions or military action.

Gunmen Kill 45 Protesters in Yemen

Armed men opened fire on crowds of antigovernment protesters Friday in Yemen’s capital, killing an estimated 45 people and injuring hundreds—prompting Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to declare a state of emergency and suggesting his government has shifted to a hard line against its hardening opposition.

Friday’s bloodshed marked the most significant escalation in violence in Yemen’s capital since protesters began in January to call for the end of Mr. Saleh’s 32-year regime. The one-day death toll stood higher than the estimated 40 demonstration-linked fatalities in Yemen until now.

The day’s violence began after Friday prayers, a time city residents have in recent weeks joined protesters who are camped near San’a University. Several people who saw Friday’s crowds estimated the demonstrators numbered 100,000 or more, San’a's largest protests yet.

Bahrain funeral turns into defiant protest

Days after the Bahraini government banned demonstrations by opponents, about 2,000 residents of the mostly Shiite Muslim village of Sitra turned a funeral into the first protest under a new three-month state of emergency, a show of deepening resistance against the regime.

The government has arrested more dissidents and human rights workers, destroying their homes and also beating relatives, witnesses said. Many other activists have now gone into hiding in this tiny country, their family members said. The regime also demolished the towering national monument at Pearl Square traffic circle, where demonstrators had gathered for weeks before their rout Wednesday.

Turkey, which has opposed foreign intervention in Libya from the outset, said after the UN resolution that it backed a no-fly zone over Libya but reiterated opposition to foreign military action in the North African country.

Deadly crackdown on Bahrain protesters

At least two people are dead and hundreds injured after security forces in Bahrain drove out pro-democracy protesters from the Pearl Roundabout in the capital, Manama.A 12-hour curfew came into force at 4pm in areas of the city including the Pearl Roundabout, the Bahrain Financial Harbour, and several other buildings which have recently been targets of protests.

By then, most of the area had been cleared after troops backed by tanks and helicopters stormed the site – the focal point of weeks-long anti-government protests in the tiny kingdom – early on Wednesday, an Al Jazeera correspondent said.Ali Al Aswad, a member of the opposition Wefaq party, told Al Jazeera that the government used Apache helicopters to shoot at peaceful protesters. He said the situation was very bad and Bahrain was heading towards a disaster.”The security forces are killing the people, we call upon UN to help us,” Aswad said.

U.S. says Saudi forces in Bahrain “not an invasion”

The United States does not consider the entry into Bahrain of Saudi Arabian security forces an invasion, the White House said on Monday.

Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia sent about 1,000 troops into Bahrain to protect government facilities after mainly Shi’ite protesters overran police and blocked roads.

“We’ve seen the reports that you’re talking about. This is not an invasion of a country,” White House spokesman Jay Carney told a news briefing.

“We urge the government of Bahrain, as we have repeatedly, as well as other GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries, to exercise restraint,” Carney added.
