India Becoming A Solar Hub: Why Is It Essential?

Solar Energy, a clean, renewable resource with zero emission, has tremendous potential for energy to harness various devices. With recent developments, solar energy systems are readily available for industrial and domestic use with the added advantage of minimum maintenance.

If we go by the stats, India faces an acute energy scarcity that is hampering its industrial growth and economic progress. Setting up new solar power system plants is inevitably dependent on importing highly volatile fossil fuels. Thus, it is essential to tackle the energy crisis through judicious utilization of abundant renewable energy resources, such as solar energy.

What Is A Solar Hub?

A solar hub is basically a space that gives access to several services that are powered by solar energy. It is like a public space with access to a Wi-Fi network, and anyone in that particular space will be able to use the solar energy to carry out any essential tasks they can operate on solar energy.

As the name suggests, it acts like a hub, an influential center of solar energy to be provided. A solar hub is a concept that focuses on setting up a solar network in the outdoor public spaces to enable its maximum utilization. Of course, you can’t carry an electricity socket with the charging appliances along with you when traveling to the office, school, or college.

Such solar hubs, if set up at different places across India, will help users carry out different activities on the go, especially in public places where they might not get any access to power.

Solar hubs basically provide an interactive platform that operates entirely on solar energy.

Why Is India Becoming A Solar Hub Important For The Country’s Growth?

As seen above, India faces several challenges on the fuel and power consumption front. With a rising population and limited energy resources, India might soon face a massive crisis when it comes to energy supply.

Besides, India is heavily dependent on fossil fuels for its energy needs. Most of the power generation is carried out by coal and mineral oil-based power plants, which contribute heavily to greenhouse gases emission.

It is becoming harder and harder to provide energy resources to such a large population. Also, India is highly diverse, with coastal areas, plains, plateaus, mountain areas, deserts, and areas with snowfall.

This is why, even today, many regions throughout the country haven’t received electricity supply. There are some regions that do have access to power lines but have to face hours of blackout and load shedding day in and day out.

The situation is a bit better in big towns, but it might not be the case in rural areas and other remote regions where you don’t have easy access to the network.

On the other hand, geographically speaking, India lies between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator, which means it is a tropical country, where sunlight is available for longer hours per day and with great intensity. India has an average annual temperature ranging from 25°C to 27.5 °C. This means that India has enormous solar potential that needs to be leveraged.

Therefore, if there are solar hubs set up in public places, one could efficiently utilize the several services they provide.

What Are The Different Benefits Of Solar Hubs?

  • A solar hub provides several services under one solar network
  • The system is easy to operate, easy to install, and uninstall
  • The solar hub system comes with a theft-proof design and is a reliable option in public places
  • Solar hubs need a negligible amount of technical maintenance and are customizable according to the requirements of a particular space
  • It provides mobile charging services along with access to viewing television
  • It comprises pollution and temperature sensors to prevent any kind of harm to the environment
  • It provides seating space with other basic facilities as required
  • It is equipped with security measures like CCTV and panic alarm systems.

How Can The Solar Hubs Be Promoted In India?

As a solution, the Indian government is promoting solar energy under the initiative ‘The National Solar Mission.’ It is a significant step taken by the Government of India and State Governments to promote ecologically sustainable growth while addressing India’s energy security challenge.

The primary objective of the National Solar Mission is to establish India as a global leader in solar energy by creating the policy conditions for its diffusion across the country as quickly as possible.

It also constitutes a significant contribution by India to the global effort to meet the challenges of climate change.

Solar water heaters have already become a necessary household item, now it’s time to get other services under solar power.

Solar energy should be made financially viable with government tax incentives and rebates. Most developed countries are switching over to solar energy as one of the prime renewable energy sources.
