3 Tips For Living Green After You Retire

While many people like the idea of living a greener life, a lot of people might feel like they don’t have the time or mental capacity to give to this type of lifestyle while they are busy working and taking care of their families. But when you’re retired, you might find that you have a lot more time on your hands that you can devote to creating some greener habits.

If this is something that you’re interested in, here are three tips for living green after you retire.

Work On Downsizing Your Home

When you have people living in your home with you, you’ll need a certain amount of space to safely and comfortably house everyone. But when you’re older and retired, the chances are good that you’ll be living with far fewer people. So to help you have a greener home, you may want to look into downsizing.

If it’s just you, you may want to consider moving into an independent living or assisted living facility so that you don’t have a home that you’re responsible for. But if you are going to stay in your own home, downsizing could be a great idea. With a smaller home, you’ll use less energy to heat or cool it and you’ll be taking up less space on the planet. So if you’re able, downsizing could be a great idea for living a greener life after retirement, in addition to saving you money on your monthly bills.

Spend Your Time Gardening

Another great way that you can live a green life after you’ve retired is by spending more of your time committed to eating locally grown food. And what’s more locally grown than food that you’ve nurtured and cultivated in your own garden? Just remember, you are not the only one who loves freshly grown veggies, so install deer fencing to keep wildlife out and good, growth in.

Gardening can be an enjoyable way for you to know exactly what’s going on in your food and avoid having to deal with the foodservice industry at all. When you purchase food from the grocery store, you participate in a lot of wasteful and non-environmentally friendly practices. So if you now have the space and time to garden while in retirement, this could be a very wise way to spend your time.

Be Conscious Of How You Travel

Many people in retirement now have the time, money, and flexibility to travel. However, if you’re not careful, traveling could result in a lot of negative impacts on the world around you.

To avoid this, think about how you can achieve your travel goals without traveling on airplanes. Air travel produces a lot of greenhouse gas. So if you can reach your destination by car, this could be a much smarter way to travel.

If you’re wanting to live a greener life now that you’re retired, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you see how this can be done.
