Air Purifiers on high demand in India

Metro cities like New Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai in India are much polluted. According to a survey by WHO, 13 out of the 20 worst polluted cities in the world were the Indian cities. With increasing urbanization and industrialization, the country is witnessing high levels of pollution, which is hampering the health of millions of its citizens. Various companies have now leveraged from this opportunity and are flooding the Indian markets with scores of purifiers. The Indian air purifier market is projected to grow at 40% CAGR in the next three to four years. These air purifiers use different technologies like the HEPA filters, advanced filtration, nanotechnology, ionisation, UV light radiation to fight the indoor air pollution.

While Philips and Sharp were the older ones, new ones like Kent RO Systems, Hindustan Sanitaryware have recently entered this market segment. As awareness amongst people increases, the sale of this product is gradually catching up. North India has become the largest market in India, with Amazon reporting 65-75% of the total country’s demand coming from North India. New Delhi can rightly be called the “pollution capital” of India. Another reason for high sales from this region is the larger number of expatriates residing here, who constitute almost 60% of total sales. I had myself seen an expatriate picking up four air purifiers at one go from a shop in Gurgaon.

Not only expatriates, but middle class people are also realizing the importance of air purifiers and are now flocking towards this products. I myself bought a Philips air purifier two months back, looking at the congestion levels in the city. Leading e-retailer Flipkart in India said the sales of air purifiers jumped 300-400% on a monthly basis, during the last quarter.

Rakesh Kaul, President and Chief, Consumer Business, HSIL, said air purifiers market in still nascent and projected to grow at a CAGR of around 40 per cent for the period 2014-2019.
