SunEdison goes on a wind energy acquisition overdrive as it looks to set up an emerging market yieldco

SunEdison expanding its wind portfolio for Terraform Global

SunEdison is going all out to acquire wind energy assets in developing markets, as it builds up a portfolio of RE assets in anticipation of a listing of a RE emerging markets yieldco, Terraform Global in the coming year. SunEdison has been expanding at a mind boggling rate after the successful listing of TERP last year. The success of TERP has emboldened the company to plan for another yieldco, which will focus on emerging markets. The company recently bought a wind developer in Latin America and then bought MS backed wind energy developer Continuum Energy in India. The company is now looking at buying another 800 MW energy portfolio from IL&FS in India. This will give the company a critical mass in RE assets and allow it to list a yieldco.

SunEdison is fast becoming a top global wind energy developer as it furiously buys assets around the world. It has already signed an agreement to buy a large wind energy portfolio from Invenergy in the USA along with its yieldco TerraForm Power. To ramp up capacity, the company is creating new vehicles to drop down assets before they can be transferred to TERP. On the other hand TERP is raising money at a very rapid rate in order to buy the large number of assets. The company’s dividend has been expanding rapidly as it buys cash generating RE assets.
