Medical Device Companies in India – Foreign Manufacturers dominate Medical Equipment Market (Regulations,Growth)

WHAT ARE MEDICAL DEVICES

Medical devices include various classes of equipments like orthopedic, laryngoscopic, prosthetics, anesthetic, dental, diagnostic, physiotherapy, gynecological, surgical instruments; autoclaves, sterilizers; infant care products; electro-medical equipment and related software, furniture; medical rubber products & disposables, reagents etc. that are used by medical officers for diagnosis and treatment of ailments.

There are many regulations that govern the regulatory framework for medical device development, testing, approval, and marketing. The clinical use of medical devices must comply with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Institutional Review Board (IRB) regulations. Investigations regarding medical devices were enacted in the US, as part of the Medical Device Amendments of 1976 and the Safe Medical Devices Act of 1990.

Medical Device Industry in India

With a rising population level & higher national growth rates & income levels, the demand for medical devices is expected to grow at a rate of over 15% per year. India’s free market environment, developed industry, investment in health infrastructure, increased demand for high quality medical devices & agreements between foreign device manufacturers and Indian manufacturers are some of the main factors that are responsible for the growth of the Indian medical market. India is growing as a key market for medical devices and equipment. A large percentage of the population can afford to receive high technology treatment. It is currently the fourth largest market in Asia and is worth about US$3 billion. The industry has seen tremendous growth over the last decade.

With steady growth in GNP, population numbers and standard of living, India represents one of the most promising markets. The Indian market for medical equipment and supplies was valued at  USD 2billion in 2010. Domestic production consists primarily of low technology products, & the demand for high technology devices is met predominantly by imports. At present, the three leading exporters of medical devices to India are the United States, Japan, and Germany. India still relies on foreign involvement for high-technology and highly specialized areas such as equipment for plastic surgery, cancer diagnosis and medical imaging.
The global medical devices Market was around$ 196 billion  in 2006. Over the last decade, Asia has accounted for an increasing percentage of medical device sales. However, despite strong growth rates, the market remains disproportionately small, ranking among the top 20 in the world. Imports constitute over half of the total Indian market. The market will expand by 150 percent in 2015, reaching a value of $2 billion.

GOVERNMENT ROLE

In the Indian scenario, the individual states retain control over many aspects of health care, the central government sets overall goals and informs the public of policy changes. As part of the World Health Organization’s “Health Care for All by 2000,” the Indian government is working to improve the quality and accessibility of medical care. India aims to increase the number of hospital beds, increase new hospital construction, and acquire advanced technologies, substantially.
over 6% of the national budget was allocated to health care in 1991, and this percentage has since increased steadily. The Government Plan, places high priority on improving health care, opening more health-care clinics and updating the facilities and equipment in the rural primary-care clinics. Because domestic manufacturers do not have the resources or technology to meet the increased demand for more sophisticated medical equipment, a large percentage will have to be satisfied by imports. The import duties on medical equipment have also been reduced.

There are hundreds of small medical equipment companies in India in different segments of the market however the big foreign companies like Meditronics,Trivitron dominate the market. This is because the entry barries to the industry are very high because of the technology. The margins in the industry are high and the sales forces make a big difference as doctors have to be targeted to educate them.

Antibiotics are used for treatment or prevention of bacterial infection. Other classes of drugs, most notably the sulfonamides, may be effective antibacterials.
Similarly, some antibiotics may have secondary uses, such as the use of demeclocycline (Declomycin, a tetracycline derivative) to treat the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) secretion. Other antibiotics may be useful in treating protozoal infections.
