Technology Wars – Minor players Nokia and Yahoo enter into strategic tie-up in Mobile Software

Nokia’s faulty execution in the smartphone segment has put it in  a position where I can only call it a minor player despite its leading marketshare in the overall mobile market. While other tech giants like Apple,Google,Microsoft and others are increasing their marketshare and presence in different segments of  Technology, Nokia is fighting to retain its numero uno position in the hyper competitive mobile market. It has been losing brand value, marketshare and margins under the onslaught of the American tech behemoths.Nokia is tying up with Yahoo in the mobile software space with both companies sharing their respective strengths in Email and Location services.

Yahoo has become a bit player in Technology with its Internet marketshare being eroded by Facebook,Google and now Twitter. It is surviving by stitching up alliances with larger players like Nokia and Microsoft. It is entirely possible that is shares the fate of Novell one day . Novell was once a giant in  Software in the 1990s before Microsoft reduced it to irrelevance. Now it is being  forced to sell itself to the highest bidder for a pittance of its earlier value.

Nokia and Yahoo in maps, e-mail deal – Reuters

Under the new deal Yahoo will be the exclusive provider of Nokia’s e-mail service, while Nokia will be exclusive provider of maps and navigation for Yahoo. The two companies said they would also start to co-operate on access to services, beginning by making it easy for people to use their Ovi user credentials across select Yahoo services.
